A man of many
companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a
brother.
Proverbs 18:24
Have
you ever been in a one-sided friendship? You know, where you consider someone a
friend and always take the time to listen to them and help them out, but they
never do the same for you? One of those friendships where you would be there no
matter what when they need you for anything, but you probably can't count on
them to be there for you? Have you ever had a friend who didn't really care how
you were doing? If you have you know that it doesn't feel good.
Have
you ever been one of those friends? Have you ever been the friend that is never
there for the other person? Most of us don't like to think of it that way, but
to be honest, most of us have probably failed to be a good friend at some point
in time during our lives. Most of us try to be good friends to others, but what
about in our relationship with God? He's always there for us, but how much do
we take that for granted? I know God never needs us, but how often do we go a
week without speaking to Him? How often do we just kind of forget about Him
until we need something?
If
you're anything like me, the answer to those questions is probably more often
than you should. While God is always ready and waiting for us, we often put Him
on a back burner because we know He isn't going anywhere. We focus on other
friendships that aren't as sure of a thing, taking the most important
relationship we have and belittling it.
Reflection:
Is your relationship with God one-sided?
Application
Step:
Make
an effort today to do something for God, not yourself. It could be anything
from helping or encouraging someone, to donating something to someone in need.
Then, give God the credit and remember to thank Him for using you for His
glory.
Prayer:
Father
God, you are so wonderful, but I have to admit that I often take you for
granted. You are the friend that sticks closer than a brother, and I am a girl
with many companions that often forgets you are there. I tend to only remember you
when I am feeling down or need help with something. Please forgive me for that.
I don't want my friendship with you to be a one-sided friendship. I want us to
have a strong friendship. Please help me to be a better friend to you, and not
to take advantage of your amazing love for me. In the name of your son, Jesus
Christ, I pray. Amen.
